In a society where the very notion of identity remains in constant flux, where the unpredictable currents of bureaucracy and technology continually challenge our comprehension of identification systems, "Carnet to Go" emerges as a profound exploration of a world characterized by perpetual transformation. Within this realm, the boundaries of identity are in perpetual motion, and the intricate interplay between chance, technology, and hypercapitalism weaves the very fabric of existence.

At its core, "Carnet to Go" presents a reimagination of conventional identification systems. The project introduces the concept of disposable identities assigned randomly. This idea compels us to closely examine established structures of identification and reevaluate the role of randomness as a bureaucratic tool. Drawing thought-provoking parallels with programs like the US Lottery visa program, "Carnet to Go" immerses us in a narrative where seemingly optimistic predictions and unconventional destinations provoke contemplation on how randomness can both shape and obscure the inner workings of bureaucratic systems.

The installation itself is a tactile and visual embodiment of these ideas. It consists of meticulously affixed photocopies of tear-off flyers reminiscent of those offering services on city streets. These flyers span the entire length and width of the exhibition space walls, forming an immersive pattern that mirrors the unpredictable nature of identity assignment. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the installation by tearing off QR codes, which they can scan to gain access to a Telegram chatbot. Through this chatbot, participants can obtain an identity number and a future destination prediction, allowing them to personally engage with the concept and experience firsthand the unpredictable nature of identity assignment.

Additionally, a video ad is seamlessly integrated into the installation, offering a stark reminder of how the allure of convenience and predictive foresight often overshadows concerns about data privacy, manipulation, and individual agency. This visual component serves as a thought-provoking commentary on the pervasive influence of profit-driven motives in our technological landscape.

As you immerse yourself in the 'Carnet to Go' installation, you are invited to navigate an intricate labyrinth where identity, bureaucracy, technology, and chance intertwine. This experience prompts contemplation on the implications of rigid identification structures, the evolving role of randomness in governance, and the ethical complexities that shape our interconnected world.

Project Components

1

Exhibition Space Installation: At the project's core lies an interactive installation within the exhibition space, comprising around 250 photocopies attached to the walls. Each of these photocopies encapsulates details about the identification system, accompanied by a detachable slip with a QR code. These QR codes act as a gateway to help access their temporary identities.

2

Telegram Chatbot: Complementing the physical experience is a Telegram chatbot accessible through smartphones. Visitors can use the chatbot to receive their identity number, destination, and personalized future predictions.

The creation of “legible people” has become a hallmark of modern statehood. To be governed is to be inscribed, codified, verified, and documented until an identity is enacted, stamped, and affirmed by paper, but whose paper?
